Vacuum Excavation Explained: Safer, Cleaner, Smarter Digging

Why hire a Vacuum / Suction Excavator?

A vacuum excavator is a type of machine used in the UK to dig without damaging what’s underground. Instead of using an excavator with a bucket or the old hand dig , it blows air into the ground to break up soil and sucks it up through a hose.

Think your hoover with a lorry attached.

How It Works

Compressed air disrupts the ground.

A tool called an air lance forces high pressure air into the ground to loosen the break the soil.

Soil is Sucked up

The suction hose pulls the loosened soil into a container on the truck.

No Damage to Utilities

Because there's no aggressive digging, it's a safer method to use near buried cables, underground utilities which are everywhere in UK streets.

Clean and Reusable Soil

The soil is kept dry, so it can be used for backfilling (put back in the hole) great for sustainability

Why It’s Used

Vacuum Excavators are becoming the go to tool for safer excavations because:

Damage prevention: Avoid costly and dangerous utility strikes

Urban suitability: Compact models work in tight spaces like London streets

Compliance: Supports safe digging practices under CDM 2015 and HSG47

Sustainability: Reduced carbon footprint compared to traditional excavation

Imagine you're working on a London pavement to install new fibre-optic broadband. You can't just dig there could be a labyrinth of underground surprises. A vac ex lets you gently uncover what's there without damaging anything, keeping everyone safe and the job completed.

Which Vacuum Excavator to use.

City DINO

The City DINO gives you full excavation power in a compact, easy to manoeuvre unit  perfect for narrow city sites and tricky urban streets. Big vac ex performance, small footprint.

Dino 12

Built on a 32-tonne chassis, the Dino 12 handles heavy-duty work without losing finesse. More power and more capacity

VC70 (Vacuum Crawler)

This remote controlled, track mounted machine squeezes into the most sensitive, hard to reach areas. Ideal for delicate digs near roots, alley ways, and where a larger truck vacuum excavator can’t get to.  Precise, ecofriendly, small and nimble.

ESE 4

RSP’s most compact vac ex, the ESE 4 perfect residential zones and tight city areas. Small but powerful.

ESE 6

Great from building sites, motorways to inner-city work. The ESE 6 offers that sweet spot between power, versatility, and ease of use.

ESE 8

It can empty its container from either side of the vehicle.  A swivel joint ( like an elbow) nozzle which can bend into and operate in tight excavations. It also uses an automatic levelling system, so the machine stays stable and safe, even when the ground is uneven.

Every year in the UK, around 60,000 utility strikes occur costing the industry an estimated £2.4 billion in direct and indirect damages. These strikes aren’t just costly they delay projects, disrupt vital services, and put lives at risk. That’s why more and more contractors are turning to vacuum excavation. It’s a faster, safer, and cleaner way to dig one that doesn’t damage what’s hidden underground. As a non-invasive, environmentally friendly alternative to traditional methods, vacuum excavation helps protect workers, prevent costly errors, and keep your project running smoothly from day one.
